Baton Rouge area - our history
time capsule holds pieces of the past
In 1989, as part of the celebration of the Baton Rouge Refinery’s 80th birthday, our employees gathered memorabilia and placed it in a time capsule to be opened in 2009.
The capsule was buried near the Refinery main office patio and is marked with a bronze plaque. Items include a copy of the “Baton Rouge Record” 80th anniversary edition, a Morning Advocate, photos, an organizational chart, popular toys from the 1980s and other personal employee items.
As part of a “back-to-the-future” contest, employees put a gold coin in the capsule to be awarded to the person who comes the closest to predicting certain aspects of Baton Rouge life in 2009. Judging a winner is left up to the persons opening the capsule.
According to the capsule instructions, employees tried to guess the answers to specific questions, such as how much a cup of coffee from the cafeteria would cost and how many employees the Refinery would have. There was even an essay question that could serve as a tie-breaker if more than one person came close to predicting the future.
